Supporting Children specialises in teaching transformational behaviour to older children and young people who are vulnerable and in crisis, particularly those who live in a care home setting with a high ratio of staff.
These children and young people are often completely disengaged, at risk, and without a clear pathway to a safe future.
Building an honest, trusting relationship through consistency, continuity and a caring attitude allows the child or young person to feel safe and express their voice. Our ‘one trusted adult’ approach allows us to teach the child or young person to re-build their self-confidence, self-esteem, self-respect and self-worth at their own pace.
A personalised programme which is tailored to the needs, choices and character of the individual takes place in a variety of environments. These include outdoor green spaces and other venues away from the classroom. Our staff support the child or young person by walking side-by-side, using active listening skills. Active and passive counselling techniques are used to teach coping strategies, whilst applying functional English, Maths and Personal Development skills as a gateway back to education. We improve resilience by teaching communication skills, helping them to adapt and become aware of when to seek help and support and where to find it. We encourage them to appreciate that the world is a place where they can thrive, explore and be happy.
Progress is monitored regularly through SMART targets and collaborative working with other agencies ensuring an integrated approach.
We are the ‘one trusted adult’ - the shoulder, the safe space, the gateway - because happy children learn.
